Gary Hung, Violin

A native of Taiwan, violinist Gary Hung has embarked upon a multifaceted music career in performing, teaching, and conducting string ensembles.  Performances in solo, chamber and orchestral capacities have led Mr. Hung to concertize in venues throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.  Mr. Hung has appeared with the Cleveland Orchestra, Pacific Symphony, Galveston Symphony, just to name a few. He has played on the soundtracks of many projects, including Fox's television hit show- "The Simpson's Halloween Special". 

As a versatile string educator, Mr. Hung is currently on the faculty of the California State University, Fullerton, Santa Ana College, and the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District.  Mr. Hung also enjoys working with a group of talented violinists at his private studio. Mr. Hung’s students continued to receive awards and accolades from international and local competitions as well as making solo appearances with orchestras such as LA Chamber Orchestra and the New West Symphony.  Students of Mr. Hung are selected members of the All-Southern Honors Orchestra, the All-State Orchestra, Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Santiago Strings. Students who pursued music degrees from his studio have been accepted to USC, Colburn, Peabody, Curtis, Julliard, Oberlin, Northwestern, Stanford, Chapman, UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, and Cal State Long Beach.

Mr. Hung is one of the current orchestra directors of the Southern California Ambassadors of Music.  Under Mr. Hung’s direction, student ambassadors of this honor ensemble have the privilege to perform in England, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.  As a seasoned string ensemble educator, one could find Mr. Hung frequently speaks at music education conferences, clinics string groups, conducts honor orchestras, and judging music festivals throughout the Southern California region.

Mr. Hung received his bachelor’s degree from Rice University's Shepherd School of Music and his master’s degree in violin performance from California State University, Fullerton.  During his graduate studies, Mr. Hung was chosen as one of the ten violin finalists to receive the Josef Gingold Memorial Violin Fellowship Award while interning with the Cleveland Orchestra.  While working on his music education credential, Mr. Hung has received California State University, Fullerton's Teaching Grant Fellowship for Academic Excellence.  Mr. Hung's was a student of Kenneth Goldsmith, Ernest Salem, I-Kuan Wu, and the late Noumi Fischer.  Mr. Hung has also performed in Masterclass settings for many world-renown​ed musicians and pedagogues such as Cho-Liang Lin, Yfrah Neaman, Elmar Olivera, Leon Spier, Kathleen Winkler, and Fredell Lack. 

Mr. Hung plays on a violin by Jacobus Horil, made circa 1760 in Rome.  He lives in Anaheim Hills with his Jack Russell, Q-tip and his cats Dexter and Picasso.  During his free time, Mr. Hung likes to volunteer at local animal shelters.
